The Importance of Having Outside Interests

Your life is made up of many vital areas including your health, family, financial, intellectual, social, work, spiritual, recreation, personal growth, romance and more.

But where do we tend to spend the most time?  For most of us it is at our jobs.  Jobs that, again for many of us, tend to define who we are and how we feel about ourselves.

Achieving Long-Term Success and Happiness
Yes, it is important to be happy at work, but jobs come and go.  Positions are eliminated, contracts end, we outgrow certain roles, or we just decide it is time to move on.  If our jobs are our sole source of satisfaction, we are likely to be disappointed in the long run.  Piling all our expectations on a single aspect of our lives is unwise and ultimately detrimental to our long-term success and happiness.

As many of us strive to build successful careers it is easy to become so engrossed in our work that we completely forget that having outside interests leads to a more balanced life.  Taking part in activities outside of work is a key factor in achieving success and being happy.

Outside Interests Set Us Apart
Activities and hobbies that we enjoy doing have a positive impact on many aspects of our lives.  These can involve volunteering at a local non-profit or church; taking part in different clubs; locating groups that do activities that you enjoy; or just finding time to pursue an activity on your own that expands on an area of interest.

Finding something that provides intellectual stimulation will enrich your perspective and make you more interesting.  Activities that promote fitness and give you opportunities to meet others can build self-esteem and keep you healthier and feeling younger.  Sometimes hobbies give you one solid thing to feel good about. If your hobby is playing golf, you can get a golf launch monitor to practice more effectively. It shows accurate data of your ball flight, carry distances, and spin rates so you can adjust after every swing.

Set Goals to Achieve Balance
Leading a balanced life has many benefits.  To achieve this balance it is important to establish goals.  Set goals for spending quality time with your family, as well as accomplishing what you need to do at work.  And remember to set aside time for you to spend on your own personal development and happiness.
