Over the next 2 \u2013 4 weeks many of us will be leaving town for spring break destinations.\u00a0 When it comes to keeping your property and possessions safe, there are a number of things that can be done to avoid the shock of returning home from vacation and finding that your home has been burglarized.<\/span><\/p>\n

Home break-ins occur thousands of times each year.\u00a0 Many of which take place when homeowners are away for an extended period of time \u2026 particularly vacations. So what do you need to do to protect yourself?\u00a0 Here are our suggestions.<\/p>\n

Ask Someone to Keep an Eye on Things …..<\/strong><\/span>
\nIdeally you have a trusted neighbor who will pick up your mail and newspaper (if you still get one) and watch for any suspicious activity around your home.\u00a0 Leave your emergency contact information with a neighbor and let a family member, not traveling with you, know your itinerary.<\/p>\n

Beware of Social Media\u2026..<\/strong><\/span>
\nSocial media has become so pervasive it is important to remember to not broadcast that you are away from home.\u00a0 Instantly sharing vacation pics on Instagram or Facebook tells the world that you are out of town.\u00a0 Posting status updates like \u201cOff to the airport\u201d is not wise either.\u00a0 Feel free to share all your awesome photos, just wait until you\u2019re home to do so.<\/p>\n

Even noting in your \u201cout of office\u201d email message that you are on vacation and when you will return can give the wrong person information you don\u2019t want them to have.<\/p>\n

Install Timers on Your Lights & Electronics \u2026..<\/strong><\/span>
\nA dark house at night is a sure sign that someone is not home. Using simple timers can allow you to turn lights, TV\u2019s and radios on and off at different time intervals. Having TVs and\/or radios plugged into a timer is a good idea to create noise and the flickering lights associated with most American homes in the evening.<\/p>\n

Outside lighting is one of the best deterrents for keeping thieves away. Illuminate the dark perimeter of your home with motion-activated floodlights or moonlighting<\/a>\u00a0like those from Full Moon Lighting and Electrical LLC.<\/p>\n

Consider a Security System \u2026..<\/strong><\/span>
