Although severe tornadoes are more common in the Plains States, tornadoes have been reported in every state.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000080;\">Staying Safe During Severe Weather<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Learn about your local community\u2019s emergency warning system for severe thunderstorms and tornadoes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Discuss thunderstorm, lightning and tornado safety with all members of your household<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Pick a safe place in your home to gather during a thunderstorm or tornado.\u00a0 This should be a basement, storm cellar or an interior room on the lowest floor with no windows, skylights or glass doors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Make a list of items to bring inside in the event of severe weather.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Protect your animals by ensuring that their shelters are well protected<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be in danger from lightning.
